Launching the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative in Rural Sierra Leone
A new project bringing climate-smart agricultural practices and market access to 200+ smallholder farmers across three districts.
Muzambiringa is proud to launch the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI), a comprehensive program designed to transform agricultural practices and market access for smallholder farmers in Sierra Leone's rural communities.
Operating across the Kono, Kailahun, and Kenema districts, the initiative will reach over 200 farmers in its first year. The program combines training in climate-smart agricultural techniques with the development of market linkages that ensure farmers receive fair prices for their produce.
Key components of the SAI include soil management workshops, crop diversification training, post-harvest loss reduction techniques, and direct connections to urban markets through our partner network. We are also introducing a digital platform that allows farmers to track market prices in real-time.
"Agriculture remains the backbone of Sierra Leone's economy, yet many farmers are stuck in subsistence-level production," explains our Agriculture Program Lead. "By equipping them with modern techniques and market access, we can help them build sustainable livelihoods."
The initiative is funded through a combination of impact investment and development grants, with the goal of becoming self-sustaining within three years through the cooperative model we are establishing. Early results from our pilot phase show a 40% increase in crop yields among participating farmers.
